Who we are

Toread is run by one person, in Taiwan. Their legal name is being added to this page. A postal address will be published here with it; until then email is the way to reach us, and every address below is read. General enquiries go to hello@toread.app; the other addresses are on the legal notice.

The service, and who may use it

Toread saves the pages you choose so you can read them later, and uses AI models to translate, summarise and file them. It is a private library: what you save is visible to you, and there is no way to publish or share a saved copy with anyone else.

• You must be 13 or older. If you are under the age of majority where you live, you may use Toread only with a parent or guardian’s permission, and they agree to these terms with you.
• One account per person. Accounts are personal. Do not share yours or let someone else sign in as you.
• Some of it lives on your devices. Toread may keep a copy of your library on your device so you can read it offline, and syncs where you stopped reading between your devices. The privacy policy says what is kept and how to remove it.
• Some changes are tried out first. We may test a change to a feature with a share of readers before deciding whether everyone gets it, so for a while you may see a different version of it than another reader does (experiments).
• Toread is in beta and invite-only. Signing up is gated by an invite list with a public waitlist. Features come and go while it is in beta, and the way accounts are opened may change.

Your account and its security

You sign in with a six-digit code emailed to your address; there is no password. Keep access to that mailbox, and turn on two-factor authentication in Settings → Account if you want a second step. You are responsible for what happens under your account. Tell us at security@toread.app if you think someone else has got into it, or if you find a vulnerability.

Your content, and what you may save

What you save stays yours. You keep every right you had in it, and we claim none. You give us only the permission we need to run the service for you: to store what you save, process it (fetch the page, extract its text, translate, summarise, file and — if you ask — read it aloud) and show it back to you. That permission covers nothing else, ends when you delete the thing or your account, and is never a licence to show your library to anybody else.

• Saving is for your own private reading. A copy Toread makes is for you. Do not use Toread to build a corpus, a mirror, a dataset or a redistribution of somebody else’s work.
• You need the right to save what you save. By saving or uploading something you tell us that you may lawfully read it and keep a personal copy of it, and that doing so breaks no agreement you are under.
• No circumventing. Do not use Toread to get round a paywall, a login, a licence limit or any technical protection, and do not use it to scrape a site in bulk.
• Some sources are refused outright. YouTube links cannot be saved, because the only way to get a video’s words is an API its terms do not allow us to use. A publisher can also ask us to stop fetching their site — see Copyright and takedowns.

Acceptable use

Do not use Toread to:

• break the law, or help anyone else to;
• store or process material that is illegal to possess where you or we are;
• infringe someone’s copyright, trade mark, privacy or other rights;
• attack the service — probing, overloading, scraping it, working round the allowances, or trying to reach another reader’s library;
• resell Toread, or run it as a back end for something else, without our written agreement;
• send spam through it, or use a newsletters address as a disposable inbox for someone else’s mail.

AI features

Translations, summaries, categories, tags, PDF repair and the daily brief are produced by AI models. The text of what you save is sent to the provider running that job, under our own API keys and never under yours; the privacy policy names who those providers are.

What a model writes is labelled “AI-generated” wherever it appears, and it can be wrong — it can invent a fact, mistranslate a sentence or summarise away the point. Do not rely on it as a substitute for the original, and never as legal, medical, financial or other professional advice. Read the source. More about AI in Toread.

Other people's services

If you connect Bluesky or X, follow a blog, or point a newsletter at your Toread address, you are using those services as well as this one, under their terms, and what they do with your data is theirs to explain. We honour deletions upstream: a post that is deleted, protected or whose author is suspended has its copy here erased, leaving a note and a link. Toread does not control those services and cannot promise that they will keep working, or keep letting us read them.

Plans, billing, renewal, cancelling and refunds

Free costs nothing. Plus is $5.99 a month and Pro is $11.99 a month, both before tax. There is no trial. A paid plan renews automatically every month, at its current price, until you cancel it. That price only changes the way the price-changes point below says.

• Lemon Squeezy is the seller. Subscriptions are sold through Lemon Squeezy, which is the merchant of record: it is the seller on your receipt, it takes your payment details, it works out and charges the tax your country requires, it remits that tax, and it issues the invoice. Its own terms and refund policy apply to the purchase itself, alongside these terms.
• Tax is added at checkout. The prices above are before tax. What you are charged is what the checkout shows you.
• Cancelling. Settings → Account → Manage billing opens the Lemon Squeezy customer portal, which is where you change your card, change plan, and cancel. Cancelling stops the next charge; your plan keeps working until the end of the period you have already paid for, and you can resume before then. Deleting your account also cancels the subscription.
• Price changes. If we change what a plan costs, we will tell you at least 30 days before it takes effect, and the new price applies from your next renewal. You can cancel before then.
• Refunds. If you are not happy, ask and we will refund you in full — within 14 days of your first payment, and within 14 days of any renewal you did not mean to keep. To ask, write to hello@toread.app; you do not have to give a reason. Lemon Squeezy pays the refund back to your card under its refund policy.

Nothing in this section takes away a right you have by law that cannot be given away. In particular, if you are a consumer in the EU or the UK you keep your 14-day right to withdraw from a distance contract, and if you are a consumer in Taiwan you keep your rights under the Consumer Protection Act. Those rights sit alongside the refund promise above, whichever is better for you.

Plan limits and fair use

Each plan includes a monthly number of saves, and Pro a monthly number of briefs; a plan also sets how many blogs you may follow, how much mail your newsletters address takes in a day, and how many X posts a month your sync may read. The current numbers are in Settings → Account, which also shows what you have used and when the count resets — those are the numbers that apply, and they are the same ones the code enforces.

Past its allowance, a paid plan keeps saving up to twice that allowance, without the AI steps, so you are never locked out of your own library mid-month. A free plan stops at its allowance. A long document or a repaired PDF counts as more than one save, which Settings → Account explains. If one account’s use is so far outside normal reading that it threatens the service for everyone else, we may ask you to stop before we do anything else.

Copyright complaints

If you own a copyright and believe something stored on Toread infringes it, write to copyright@toread.app. Copyright and takedowns sets out what a notice needs, what we do when one arrives, how to file a counter-notice, and how a publisher can ask us never to fetch their site. Accounts that infringe repeatedly are terminated.

Suspension and termination

You can stop at any time: delete your account in Settings → Account, which deletes your data as the privacy policy describes and cancels any subscription. Export first if you want a copy — Settings → Data — because deletion is immediate and cannot be undone.

We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, that we are legally required to close, or that is putting the service at risk. Unless the law or the seriousness of the breach stops us, we will tell you first and give you a chance to put it right, and we will give you a reasonable chance to export your data before anything is deleted. If we close a paid account for a reason that is not your fault, we refund the unused part of the period.

Changes, availability and beta

Toread is a small service run by one person. We change it, add to it and take things out of it — the changelog records what changed. We do not promise any level of availability, there is no service level agreement, and there will be outages. A feature you rely on may be removed; where that would lose you data, we will say so before it happens and give you a way to export it.

Disclaimers and limits on liability

To the extent the law allows, Toread is provided as it is: we do not promise it will be uninterrupted or error-free, that a saved copy will always be readable, or that anything a model writes is accurate.

To the extent the law allows, our total liability to you for everything arising out of these terms or your use of Toread is limited to the greater of what you paid us in the twelve months before the claim, or US$50. To the same extent, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, lost profits, or the loss of data you had another copy of.

None of this limits liability that cannot be limited by law: fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, death or personal injury caused by negligence, gross negligence or wilful misconduct, or the statutory guarantees and consumer rights you have where you live. If you are a consumer, nothing in these terms affects those rights.

Governing law and where a dispute goes

These terms are governed by the laws of Taiwan (Republic of China), and a dispute about them goes to the Taiwan Taipei District Court.

If you are a consumer, that does not take anything away from you: you keep the protections of the mandatory law of the country you live in, and you may bring a claim in the courts of that country. We will always try to sort a problem out by email first — write to hello@toread.app.

Changes to these terms

We will tell you in the app or by email at least 30 days before a material change takes effect, and the version and date at the top will change with it. Small corrections — a clearer sentence, a fixed link — take effect when they are published. If you do not agree to a change, stop using Toread and delete your account before it takes effect; if you were paying, we refund the unused part of the period.
